'Kay, well, if you don't know who Canaan is, then here's the backstory.



Canaan is a NPC ( non-playable character ) in the Bandai/Namco PS2 Game Xenosaga Episode II and III. He is not in Episode I.

He is a specially customized weapons-grade enhanced-memory model Realian. He has supressed emotions to make him immune to the Song of Nephilum. As far as I know, Wilhelm designed him and he works directly under Representative Helmer.

He's generally anti-social and doesn't like very many people. He has very little patience and gets bored easily, and almost everything gets on his nerves.

He's 6'0" tall and weighs 159 lbs, has orange hair and yellow eyes. He has a tattoo on the left side of his neck that I THINK has his model number under it: 3231185CA >.>;

And he has the absolute ugliest outfit in the entire game T_T because he is a background NPC and they didn't feel it necassary to give him decent clothes.

In XS III he is semi-playable only on the S-Line Division level, then goes back to being an NPC. You can also play as him in Hakox 8)

Jin stuck part of the Y-Data that he stole from gosh-knows-where inside Canaan and it stayed there for 14 years until they finally got around to processing it or whatever. And to my knowledge, this is because every time they messed with it, he'd crash on them and shut down or something. So they had to go back to Old Miltia and use the original...computer...thing... to get it out.

He used to operate E.S. Asher, but at some point for some unexplained reason, Jr. ends up with it instead. chaos was both their co-pilots, much to Canaan's annoyance; he wants to do everything alone. 14 years ago E.S.s couldn't be operated by ordinary people, so he was Asher's pilot and I guess he had some kind of reputation for being really good at it.

And then apparently they made E.S.s to where they could be used by normal people, and Jr. stole it from him and Canaan was like wtf.

In XS3, Canaan gets a slightly redesigned character model and a new voice actor ( he now sounds like Mugen from Samurai Champloo and Vincent from FF7AC 8D ). For some reason they decided to either make him look older, or really tired O.o not sure why they did that. but anyway.

And though it never mentions it anywhere in the game, he suddenly starts talking differently. I guess they must have re-activated his emotions cuz he loses that laid-back lazy tone he used to have and gets kind of crabby on people sometimes O.o?

anyway, Shion and Doctus ( another NPC ) and Miyuki use him to hack into Vector's S-Line data place and steal a bunch of data, cuz he's the fancy enhanced-memory model and you can stuff like a ton of crap in him and he remembers it all 8D

Then later Doctus finds that in the data they stole there's something about this survailence...surveilance... *cough* program that just happens to be named "Program Canaan". so naturally guess who she comes running to. T_T

She tries get him to confess on whatever it is, but he has no idea wtf she's talking about and then she gives him the data and politely informs him that if he gets in their way, even if it's not by his own will, she's gonna "eliminate" him 8) this is why I don't like Doctus.


*ahem* moving on.

He shows up at random parts thru the story after that; he helps them save Kosie and get the Elsa back and yadda yadda, makes a sincere attempt to fight Citrine... fails miserably... Gets taken prisoner with all the girls... lol. cough.

but he doesn't really become all that important until the end of XS 3 where we finally find out what that Program Canaan thing does. Wilhelm stuck it in him and a bunch of other Realians when they were made ( so it can't be taken out ) and it just sits around taking notes on everything that happens and sends it back to Wilhelm thru the handy Compass of Order 8)

soooo....everything that the other characters have been doing, while they're sneaking around plotting against Vector, Wilhelm's known about it all along because the program inside Canaan automatically sends the data to the Compass without him knowing he's doing it.

Soooo..... needless to say, everybody gets pissed at him, and he kills himself in order to destroy Voyager and the program that made him a traitor.

in XS 3 he also flies Doctus's A.M.W.S. or whatever it was, and co-pilots Jin's Reuben 8D but he never gets Asher back ;.;



now, about Lactis.

In order to understand the Canaan/Lactis thing, you gotta know a slight bit about Ziggy:


Ziggy used to be Jan Sauer, who was a caption of the Something-Or-Other police force that catches criminals that are using the UMN. They go in there and fight bad guys and such.

One of his subordinates was Lactis, who was made to look like a teenager with white hair and purple eyes ( he's a really old model 8D ).

Jan, Lactis, and some chick, and I guess some other ppl, ran around after this guy on the UMN who was killing people with some kind of strange Biblical-related technic where he got people to commit suicide without actually killing them. That would be Voyage, aka, Erich Webber. O.o

I'm pretty sure Lacits had Program Canaan inside him, too. chaos shows up and apparently tells him something cryptic about how he has to "protect Canaan" which doens't really make any sense and I guess Lactis flipped out over ppl talking to him in his head. 8)

And......foggy on the details, but Voyager kills Jan's wife and son, and then Jan commits suicide <.<

100 years later.... Jan has been revived as a cyborg due to the Life Recycling Act and I'm not sure what exactly happened to Lactis, but Vector made a new Realian and used his AI/personality for it. That would be Canaan. Who, again, also carries Program Canaan. I guess they were running out of names by the time they made him. Or something. I'm not sure why he has the same name as the program unless Wilhelm just liked him the best or something. It never really explains why he's different from all the other Realians, either ( they don't usually have tattoos and earrings and go around disrespecting humans, they're supposed to be submissive and such )



Aaaaaannnd that's all I know. 8)
